It can feel very large and permanent, and still, the universe is on a clear night when you are stargazing. But a new theoretical paper, Critical Collapse of Spacetime Crystals, by researchers from TU Wien and Goethe University Frankfurt, claims that the fabric of the universe itself may actively deform in truly surprising ways. Physicists have mathematically simulated the spacetime organizing itself into a regular, crystal-like structure during a critical collapse to map out how adding an arbitrarily small amount of energy could possibly trigger the birth of microscopic, short-lived black holes.
