Riyadh Fight Set, Opponent Still a Secret
Alalshikh, chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority, teased the bout as a “big, big, big fight,” revealing it will headline a card titled “Mexico Against the World.”
The event will also launch Canelo Promotions, with Alvarez leading a lineup of Mexican fighters taking on international opponents. Canelo himself will compete in the main event for a world title, with Alalshikh promising a surprise for fans in Saudi Arabia.
First Fight in Nearly a Year
If all goes as planned, this will be Alvarez’s first fight since September last year, when he suffered a unanimous decision loss to Terence Crawford in Las Vegas. That defeat, followed by elbow surgery, sidelined the 35-year-old and sparked questions about how long he’d stay away.
Now, it looks like the break is over.
Canelo, who holds a record of 63 wins, 3 losses, 2 draws, and 39 knockouts, has said he’ll keep fighting as long as his body allows him to compete at the highest level.
Crawford Rematch Off the Table
A rematch with Crawford doesn’t appear to be happening anytime soon. The undefeated American announced his retirement in December, calling his win over Canelo a career-defining moment. Unless Crawford changes his mind, Alvarez will be facing a new opponent in Riyadh.
Saudi Arabia’s Boxing Push Continues
Canelo’s arrival adds more weight to Saudi Arabia’s growing presence in global boxing. With major fights increasingly landing in Riyadh, the September 12 card signals another big step in turning the city into a go-to destination for elite combat sports.
For now, fans will have to wait for the final reveal. The stage is set — only one name is missing.
