World Hijab Day is celebrated annually on February 1st to raise awareness about hijab and dismantle Islamophobia. The hijab is a piece of clothing that Muslim women cover their heads with because it is a practice in the religion of Islam. Muslim women wear the hijab for modesty and most importantly, they have the choice to practice the hijab or not. Some Muslim women choose to wear the hijab while others don't, meaning they have a choice, and their decision should be respected.

The Birth of World Hijab Day

In 2013, World Hijab Day (WHD) was founded by Muslim New Yorker Nazma Khan. She designated February 1st as Hijab Day to invite women from different faiths and cultures to experience the hijab. 

In 2018, World Hijab Day became a non-profit organization that helped with awareness and education about the concept of hijab. In her interview, Khan emphasized that “hijab is my identity and celebrating my identity is liberating.” While sharing the goals of her movement with Islamic Channel, Khan also said “I envision a world where my sisters can flaunt their hijab with pride, walking on the street without being persecuted for their hijab.”
