Madinah Has the Highest Unemployment Rates in Saudi Arabia

The General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT) released new data which revealed that Madinah recorded the highest unemployment rate in Saudi Arabia at 12.2%, while Riyadh recorded the lowest at 6.7%.

Madinah was followed by Jazan with an unemployment rate of 11%, Makkah at 7%, and the Eastern Province at 6.9%.

GASTAT's data also showed that the unemployment rate significantly decreased to 8% in the fourth quarter of 2022, compared to 9.9% in the previous quarter.

The authority's data reveals that the unemployment rate for Saudi citizens aged 15 to 24 years old reached 16.8% in the fourth quarter of 2022, while the unemployment rate for citizens aged 25 to 54 years old reached 7% during the same period. 

Citizens holding a bachelor's degree or an equivalent degree had the highest unemployment rate at 9.9% in the fourth quarter of 2022. Diploma holders had an unemployment rate of 8.1% while high school graduates had an unemployment rate of 7.4%. However, people who had doctorate degrees had the lowest unemployment rate at 0.2%.

In terms of industry, the highest unemployment rate for Saudi citizens was in the educational specialization of mathematics and statistics at 12.8%, followed by 11.6% for arts and humanities, and 10% for communications and information technology.
