Construction accelerates on the Expo 2030 Riyadh site as Saudi Arabia presents progress updates to the BIE, highlighting a master plan featuring 230 spherical pavilions and a zero-carbon vision.

The vision for Expo 2030 Riyadh is rapidly transitioning from blueprint to reality, with construction activities now well underway on the event site. During a high-level meeting of the Executive Committee of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) in Paris, Saudi officials provided a comprehensive update on the Kingdom's preparations, signaling a significant acceleration in infrastructure and development.
His Excellency Adel Al-Jubeir, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Commissioner General of Expo 2030 Riyadh, led the Saudi delegation. In his presentation, Al-Jubeir highlighted the robust momentum across all fronts, including master planning, design, infrastructure development, and communication strategies. The delegation also noted a surge in global interest, with numerous countries already confirming their participation in the upcoming event.
The BIE meeting coincides with a period of rapid delivery on the ground. The site, located near the new King Salman International Airport, is the focal point of a master plan first unveiled in June 2023 during a reception in Paris attended by 179 BIE member states.
Themed "Foresight for Tomorrow," the Expo aims to address global challenges and unlock opportunities through innovation, a principle deeply rooted in Saudi identity and the nation's Vision 2030. The event is projected to host over 230 exhibition pavilions representing 197 participating nations, with organizers aiming to attract more than 42 million visitors.
The architectural design is set to be a defining feature of the event. Each national pavilion will be spherical in shape, featuring an equatorial line that pays homage to the ancient urban style, history, and culture of Riyadh. In a unique nod to global connectivity, the location of each country's pavilion will be determined by its longitude, symbolizing the Kingdom's commitment to international cooperation.
Sustainability lies at the core of the Expo's design. The site is planned to operate on clean, solar-powered resources, targeting zero carbon emissions. The master plan incorporates a modern green oasis situated within one of the tributaries of Wadi As Sulai, alongside shaded corridors designed to ensure visitor comfort in the desert climate.
Accessibility is another key pillar of the development. The exhibition site will be minutes away from the Riyadh Metro, with the network connecting three distinct exhibition entrances to facilitate easy movement for millions of guests.
At the heart of the main plan stands a vital landmark: a structure comprising 195 columns, each representing a participating country. This central hub will house three primary pavilions focused on the sub-themes of "Prosperity for All," "Climate Action," and "A Different Tomorrow."
Beyond the event itself, the master plan emphasizes the long-term utility of the site. Organizers intend to repurpose the infrastructure post-Expo to develop innovative urban models, ensuring the location continues to foster creativity and innovation for the city of Riyadh long after the 2030 countdown ends.
