Saudi Arabia is set to end the era of manual car washing at fuel stations and service centers as municipalities begin actively licensing and enforcing a shift toward fully automatic systems. The Permanent Executive Committee for Fuel Stations and Service Centers, operating under the Ministry of Energy, has announced that existing businesses may continue manual operations only until their current licenses expire. Following expiration, operators must implement automated systems to remain licensed.
This regulatory change aims to significantly raise service efficiency and speed while drastically reducing water and energy consumption. The mandated automated systems utilize advanced recycling and quantity control technologies designed to minimize waste and promote environmental sustainability. Additionally, the transition is expected to enhance safety standards within fuel stations and improve overall operational efficiency.
The decision marks the conclusion of a service tradition that dates back to the 1920s, evolving from simple washing methods to a widespread commercial activity in neighborhoods and gas stations during the 1970s and 1980s. The new policy aligns with the Kingdom's broader strategy to modernize public services, foster innovation across various sectors, and adhere to strict quality and safety standards.
Automotive experts highlight that the shift offers substantial benefits regarding convenience and time management. Automated machines can typically clean a vehicle in three to five minutes, allowing drivers to remain seated while the process completes. However, the high initial cost of purchasing and installing these machines presents a challenge for some entrepreneurs, though market adjustments are anticipated to address pricing concerns over time.

While the regulation promises improved resource conservation and faster service, it may alter consumer habits for those who prefer the meticulous attention of hand-washing, particularly for cleaning hard-to-reach areas like wheel wells and door jambs. Despite these preferences, the move solidifies the Kingdom's commitment to modernizing its infrastructure and promoting sustainable practices in the automotive service sector.
