The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief) has established a central kitchen in the Gaza Strip that is now providing 24,000 daily hot meals to Palestinians in central Gaza, marking a significant humanitarian effort during the holy month of Ramadan.
The Saudi kitchen began operations at the start of Ramadan last week, serving Palestinians in the central Gaza towns of Deir Al-Balah and Al-Qarara. The initiative is part of the Saudi Popular Campaign for the Relief of the Palestinian People in the Gaza Strip, implemented in cooperation with the Saudi Center for Culture and Heritage.
"This is one of the largest crises in the history of humanity," said Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, the general supervisor of KSrelief, describing the humanitarian situation in Gaza. He highlighted that Palestinians are facing displacement and urgent humanitarian needs, with 90 percent of Gaza's population living below the poverty line and lacking access to food, water, medicine, and necessities for children and infants.
The Saudi kitchen represents a comprehensive response to the ongoing crisis. By the end of the initiative period, the facility will have produced and distributed 3,600,000 meals to Palestinians in central Gaza while employing 40 local workers, according to the Saudi Press Agency.
Dr. Al-Rabeeah described the kitchen as "the largest central kitchen available for a group of displaced people," noting that it will serve over 36,000 families across the region. The scale of the operation reflects Saudi Arabia's commitment to addressing the severe humanitarian conditions in Gaza.
The Saudi humanitarian effort extends beyond the kitchen initiative. Saudi Arabia was one of the first countries to launch an air bridge, as well as sea and land convoys, sending aid to Gaza via over 80 planes and dozens of vessels through the Jordanian and Egyptian crossings.
When other means of aid delivery were not possible following the events of October 2023, KSrelief utilized airdrops to deliver essential supplies to Gaza, demonstrating the kingdom's flexibility and determination in reaching those in need.
The kitchen operation comes as Palestinians in Gaza continue to face severe challenges, with the United Nations and other international organizations repeatedly warning of the deteriorating humanitarian conditions. The Saudi initiative provides not just meals but also employment opportunities for local workers, contributing to both immediate relief and long-term economic support.
The timing of the initiative during Ramadan adds spiritual significance to the humanitarian effort, as Muslims around the world observe the holy month through fasting and increased charitable giving.
