Research headed by NASA Goddard planetary scientist Prabal Saxena has revealed that permanently shadowed craters located at the lunar south pole are capable of sustaining microbial life. These cold, dark habitats, with their thick layer of ice, are virtual refuges from the deadly cosmic rays and could, this way, be home to the microbes.
