Sun Aligns Over Kaaba, Revealing Exact Qibla Direction

In a rare cosmic moment, the sun positioned itself directly above the Kaaba in Mecca on Tuesday. For Muslims around the world, this created a natural and precise way to find the Qibla, the direction faced during prayer.

Shadows Gone, Qibla Found

During the alignment—known as a Solar Zenithshadows completely disappeared near the Kaaba as sunlight hit it from directly above. According to the Jeddah Astronomy Society, anyone who could see the sun at that exact moment could simply face it to align their prayer perfectly with Mecca.

When and Why It Happens

This special event happens twice a year, usually in late May and mid-July, when the sun moves across Mecca’s latitude of 21.4°N while shifting southward from the Tropic of Cancer. It’s a natural effect of Earth’s 23.5° tilt—and the timing coincides with Dhuhr (midday) prayer in Mecca.

Spiritual Meets Scientific

Majed Abu Zahra, President of the Jeddah Astronomy Society, explained that this moment has both spiritual value and scientific intrigue. Not only does it give Muslims a chance to connect their prayers with cosmic precision, but it also helps astronomers observe how light behaves near the zenith, aiding research on atmospheric refraction.

A High-Tech-Free Compass

For Muslims without access to compasses or apps, this is one of the few times they can just look up and align their prayer perfectly—no GPS required. It’s a beautiful reminder of how nature and faith sometimes line up in the most literal sense.
