Saudi Arabia is reestablishing diplomatic relations with Canada, according to a statement from the Foreign Ministry on Wednesday.

The decision to proceed was made during a conversation between Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed Bin Salman and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Bangkok last November.

According to the ministry, mutual respect and shared interests are at the core of both the country's desire to restore relations. "The decision follows the desire of both sides to restore diplomatic relations between both countries on the basis of mutual respect and common interest."

New ambassadors will be chosen by each side. While Canada selected Jean-Philippe Linteau, a longtime member of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Saudi Arabia has not yet announced its selection.
