How AI Transforms Hajj: Safer, Faster, Streamlined Pilgrimage

As millions of Muslims prepare for this year’s Hajj, Saudi Arabia is using artificial intelligence to make the pilgrimage safer, faster, and more organized. By enhancing crowd management and digital services, the Kingdom is offering worshippers from around the world a smoother and more secure journey.

The Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) leads this initiative, operating various AI-powered platforms that support pilgrims at every stage—from their departure to their return after completing Hajj.

Majed al-Shehry, official spokesperson for SDAIA, was quoted as saying by Al Arabiya English, “Our goal is to ensure that AI operates quietly in the background while making the pilgrim journey safer, smoother and more efficient at every stage.”

AI tools are being used to analyze data, predict trends, and monitor operations in real time, improving safety measures and helping authorities manage large crowds effectively.

These systems now play a critical role in ensuring smooth crowd flows, enhancing transport logistics, and even offering multilingual support for pilgrims participating in one of the world’s largest annual gatherings.

AI-Powered Crowd Management

Crowd management is among the key focuses this Hajj season, particularly around the Grand Mosque in Mecca and sites like Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah.

SDAIA has partnered with the Ministry of Interior to introduce platforms like Baseer and Sawaher. These systems use computer vision, AI analytics, and thermal imaging to track crowd density and movement patterns live.

The AI systems study video feeds, predict congestion, and aid in faster decision-making by authorities to ensure safe crowd management.

Saudi Arabia has also launched an AI-powered robot providing religious guidance and translations in multiple languages. It brings spiritual and educational support to pilgrims using its easy, interactive interface. Features include information about mosque services, answers to religious questions, and instant translations to help visitors communicate easily.

Smart Digital Services for Pilgrims

Saudi Arabia has introduced digital services powered by AI to simplify the pilgrim experience. Over 1.5 million travelers have already benefited from the Mecca Route Initiative, which operates in 17 airports across 10 countries. This system allows pilgrims to finish travel procedures before arriving, including biometric registration and ticket processing.

Also, applications like Tawakkalna and Nusuk offer around 1,300 digital services, including Hajj permits, navigation tools, weather updates, emergency response features, and more. The Nusuk Card even provides pilgrims with their medical records and emergency numbers.

Vision for the Future

This transformation is part of Saudi Arabia’s larger strategy to lead in digital innovations and smart governance. The Kingdom continues to expand its investments in technologies like smart surveillance, predictive analytics, robotics, and automated services. These advancements aim to improve Hajj operations in the coming years.

SDAIA commented, “The continued integration of AI technologies into Hajj operations reflects Saudi Arabia’s broader efforts to position the Kingdom as a global leader in digital transformation and smart governance, while improving the experience and safety of pilgrims from around the world.”
