Saudi Arabia’s ambitious Red Sea International Airport (RSI) is fast approaching completion, with a grand opening scheduled by the end of 2025. As a vital part of the luxurious Red Sea Global (RSG) tourism project, RSI promises travelers an unmatched experience featuring passenger pods, seaplanes, and air taxis.

This isn’t just another airport. Designed to handle 1 million visitors annually (about 2 million passenger movements), RSI aims to redefine luxury air travel. Since April 2024, it has welcomed international passengers via bi-weekly flights from Dubai, and by summer 2025, its main terminal will open fully, inching closer to the 2030 goal of one million tourists annually.

Abdulaziz Alabdan, Executive Director of Airport Operations at RSG, describes RSI as a “boutique airport” focused entirely on guest experience and operational excellence. The airport’s standout feature is its rapid passenger processing, guests can expect to be off the plane and out of the airport in under six minutes thanks to cutting-edge technology.

Sustainability at the Core

RSI is the region’s only off-grid airport, powered completely by renewable energy, including a large solar farm. This makes it a pioneer in sustainable aviation infrastructure.

Seamless Travel with Smart Technology

A Smart Baggage Management system ensures travelers’ luggage is automatically handled and delivered directly to their resorts, eliminating the hassle of traditional baggage claims. For departures, remote check-in stations at luxury hotels allow guests to check in bags ahead of time, Alabdan estimates 85% of departing passengers will use this convenient service.

Innovative Passenger Pods

The main terminal features five distinct passenger “pods,” each with integrated security, immigration, and customs services. This decentralization means travelers clear all procedures within their pod and go straight to their gate, often with a direct view of their aircraft right from the curbside, reducing walking and wait times.

Looking ahead, RSI plans to introduce less intrusive security screening, including facial recognition and “security tunnels” where passengers are screened seamlessly without stopping.

Air Taxis, Seaplanes, and a Future-Ready Airport

Since September 2023, RSI has operated a smaller Air Taxi Terminal serving seaplanes and general aviation. The full main terminal, including three pods, will be operational by mid-2025, with full completion by late 2025.

RSI’s 3,700-meter runway can accommodate the largest aircraft, including the Airbus A380, allowing for future expansion as travel demand increases. Airlines like Saudia, flydubai, and flynas already serve RSI, with discussions ongoing with 60+ global carriers, including major players and plans for direct flights to key European hubs like London, Frankfurt, and Paris.

Fly Red Sea Seaplanes

A unique highlight is the Fly Red Sea seaplane service using hybrid Cessna Caravan aircraft capable of landing on water and land. These seaplanes provide premium guests quick and comfortable transfers to islands and resorts, featuring business-class cabins seating six to eight passengers. Exclusively fueled by Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), the fleet will soon expand to meet growing demand.

Looking Ahead to eVTOLs

RSI is also preparing for the future with plans to transition to eVTOLs (electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicles) as the technology matures, offering even greener and more efficient travel options.
