New Bridges, Wider Roads: Riyadh Launches SR8 Billion Projects to Fix Its Busiest Routes

If daily traffic in Riyadh feels endless, some relief is officially on the way. Saudi Arabia has launched phase three of its major road corridor development projects, pouring over SR8 billion into upgrading some of the capital’s busiest routes.

The works will roll out over the next three to four years, all aimed at smoother drives and fewer bottlenecks.

Big Changes on Riyadh’s Busiest Roads

One of the largest upgrades is coming to Jeddah Road, where 29 kilometres will be redeveloped. The project includes 14 bridges and expands the road to five lanes, boosting capacity on a key traffic artery.

Taif Road is also getting a major refresh across 15 kilometres, with four bridges and four lanes designed to keep traffic moving.

New Bridges and Tunnels on the Way

To cut congestion and improve connections, Thumamah Road will be upgraded over eight kilometres, adding three bridges and three tunnels.

Smaller but strategic upgrades are also planned for:

  • King Abdulaziz Road (4.7 km with four bridges)

  • Othman bin Affan Road (4.3 km with seven bridges)

What This Means for Drivers

Once completed, these projects are expected to reduce congestion, improve road safety, and shorten travel times across Riyadh — especially as the city continues to grow fast.

It’s a long-term build, but for commuters, it’s a step toward less time stuck behind the wheel.
