Riyadh Metro's First Phase Launches This Sunday

Saudi Arabia has taken a major step toward transforming urban mobility with the launch of the Riyadh Metro. This driverless transport system is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion and boost the value of commercial and residential real estate in Riyadh.

The first phase of the metro, inaugurated by King Salman, is already making waves. Designed to handle 1.2 million passengers daily, this marks a critical milestone in enhancing the quality of life and reshaping transportation in the city.

A Vision for the Future

Once fully operational, the Riyadh Metro will double its capacity, accommodating up to 2.4 million passengers daily. The network will feature six lines, spanning 85 stations across 176 km, seamlessly connecting key areas such as business hubs, cultural landmarks, and residential neighborhoods.

The Blue, Yellow, and Purple lines will be the first to open, covering over 104 km, and are expected to be fully operational by December 1, 2024, according to the Royal Commission for Riyadh City.

In Line With Vision 2030

The Riyadh Metro is a cornerstone of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, aiming to modernize public transport and drive sustainable urban development. By providing a clean alternative to traditional vehicles, the metro will help reduce carbon emissions, alleviate traffic congestion, and shorten travel times.

In addition to the metro, the transport network will include 80 bus routes, 2,860 stops, and 842 buses, ensuring comprehensive coverage of Riyadh’s most densely populated areas.

Economic and Environmental Benefits

The Riyadh Metro is more than just a transport project—it’s a significant boost for the Saudi economy. During construction, the project created over 65,000 jobs and attracted more than 2,000 Saudi employees, with locals representing 50-70% of the workforce in operating companies.

By connecting key locations like King Khalid International Airport, King Abdullah Financial District, and downtown Riyadh, the metro will improve connectivity and fuel economic activity across the city.
