Saudi Leaders Extend Condolences to China After Devastating Hong Kong Fire

Saudi Arabia’s top leadership has conveyed condolences to China after a catastrophic fire in Hong Kong claimed at least 128 lives, marking the city’s deadliest blaze in nearly eight decades.

In an official cable to Chinese President Xi Jinping, King Salman offered his sincere condolences and sympathy to the families of the deceased, adding his wishes “for the safe return of the missing and a speedy recovery for the injured.”

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman also sent a message of solidarity to President Xi, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

Toll expected to rise as hundreds remain unaccounted for

Rescue teams have so far recovered 128 bodies from the Wang Fuk Court residential complex in Tai Po, near the mainland China border. Authorities warned the number is expected to climb, with around 200 people still unaccounted for. The complex houses more than 4,600 residents, making the search operation one of the largest in recent Hong Kong history.

The fire began on the afternoon of Nov. 26, rapidly sweeping through seven of the eight 32-storey towers. The buildings were covered in bamboo scaffolding, green mesh, and foam insulation as part of ongoing renovation works — conditions that officials say may have contributed to the fast spread of the flames.

Authorities have arrested 11 people in connection with the tragedy as investigations continue.
