Saudi Officials Indicate Ramadan 2025 Could Start on March 1

This year, something fascinating is happening - Ramadan is expected to start exactly on March 1, 2025, aligning perfectly with the first day of the Hijri month.

According to Eng. Majed Abu Zahra, president of the Jeddah Astronomical Society, this rare event is a beautiful reminder of how the movements of the moon and earth synchronize. The Hijri calendar, which follows the lunar cycle, typically shifts back by 10 to 12 days each year compared to the Gregorian calendar. This means Ramadan moves through different seasons over a span of about 33 years.

Why Is This So Special?

The Hijri and Gregorian calendars don’t usually align like this. The Hijri calendar has about 354 or 355 days, making it shorter than the 365-day Gregorian calendar. But this year, the two calendars are in sync, creating a unique moment of astronomical harmony.

Abu Zahra explained that this kind of alignment happens only once every 33 years or so—and even then, it doesn’t always fall in the same month. This means, for the first time in decades, you won’t need to mentally calculate when Ramadan starts on the Gregorian calendar.

So, if you’ve ever wondered about the connection between lunar and solar cycles, this year’s Ramadan timing is the perfect example of how beautifully the universe aligns!
