The Opening of The First National Forum for Human Rights

On Monday, September 12, Her Excellency Mrs. Maryam bint Abdullah Al-Attiyah, Chairperson of the National Human Rights Committee, inaugurated the first national forum for human rights, which  organize by the National Human Rights Committee over two days at Mondrian Hotel, about : The role of law enforcement institutions in protecting human rights during the FIFA World Cup FIFA Qatar 2022 in partnership with the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Labor, the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, and the United Nations Center for Training and Documentation in the Field of Human Rights for Southwest Asia and the Arab Region.

The forum aims to highlight the efforts made by each party within the preparations of the various state institutions for the World Cup and how to integrate sports into the culture of human rights.

Over the course of several sessions, the forum will discuss 11 working papers in order to achieve the goal of spreading awareness of the need to approach human rights in the work of law enforcement institutions within the framework of national performance that is being made to provide the reasons and ingredients for the success of the tournament and enrich the Qatari human rights practice in dealing with the World Cup.

At the beginning of the forum, HE Chairperson of the National Human Rights Committee, Maryam bint Abdullah Al-Attiyah, stressed the importance of the vital and important role that law enforcement officials play in the field of human rights protection, in implementation of the provisions of the Qatari Constitution and international and regional human rights treaties to which Qatar has acceded.

Her Excellency explained that the State of Qatar is on a date with an important historical event by hosting and organizing the 2022 World Cup during the coming months of November and December, for the first time in our Arab region, which is characterized by its Arab and Islamic values, those values that emphasized human dignity and the right to a dignified life on the basis of freedom  justice, equality and tolerance among human beings and respect for diversity and difference.

In a related context, Mr. Mohammed Hassan Al-Obaidly, Assistant Undersecretary for Labor Affairs at the Ministry of Labor, stressed that Qatar has made great efforts to support the working and living conditions of expatriate workers, and has also carried out comprehensive reforms during the recent period with regard to labor laws and regulations with the aim of supporting the guarantees and protection of migrant workers, to achieve basic principles and rights in the field of work and provide decent work for all, given that the State of Qatar places the rights of all migrant workers at the center of its economic and social policies based on what is included in its comprehensive future vision “Qatar National Vision 2030” and in line with the sustainable development goals of the United Nations 2030.

In his speech at the opening session of the First National Forum for Human Rights, the Assistant Undersecretary for Labor Affairs at the Ministry of Labor reviewed the reforms that have taken place, noting that important reforms have been made on the labor market that will benefit employers, workers and the state alike.
