Islam Makhachev Beats Alexander Volkanovski in UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi

Islam Makhachev defended his lightweight title against Alexander Volkanovski on Saturday, October 21st, as the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returned to Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi.

A huge left head kick out of nowhere put Volkanovski down and after a few unprotected shots to the head referee Marc Goddard jumped in.

It was arguably one of his most impressive performances to date as Makhachev set up his knockout in stunning fashion after he immediately began chopping away at Volkanovski with kicks in the opening round. 

The stoppage came at just 3:06 in the first round.

Makhachev also beat Volkanovski via unanimous decision in a previous Fight of the Year contender in February.

In the co-main event, Khamzat Chimaev set himself up for a fight with middleweight champion Sean Strickland in 2024 after edging former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman in a majority decision.
