Umrah Travelers No Longer Need Meningitis Vaccine

Travelers heading to Saudi Arabia for Umrah no longer need to be vaccinated against Neisseria meningitis. The General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) announced the update in a circular on Thursday, outlining the revised vaccination requirements for Umrah pilgrims.

This decision overturns a previous directive issued last month that made meningitis shots mandatory. The new guidelines have been sent to all airlines operating in Saudi airports, including private carriers, ensuring compliance.

Updated Health Requirements for Umrah

Before this change, Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Health required all Umrah pilgrims to get the meningitis vaccine, regardless of their visa type. The shot had to be administered between 10 days and three years before arrival.

While the meningitis vaccine is no longer required, authorities still advise Umrah and Hajj pilgrims to take flu shots before their trips. The pneumococcal vaccine is also recommended for travelers aged 65 and above, as well as those with chronic illnesses.
