On Tuesday, thousands of city employees in Los Angeles, including sanitation workers, lifeguards, and traffic cops, went on strike for 24 hours in protest of low pay and unfair labor practices.

Picket lines were set up early in the morning at the Los Angeles International Airport and other locations, and a sizable gathering was staged downtown at City Hall later in the morning. More than 11,000 LA city employees are on strike, according to SEIU Local 721. These employees include mechanics, engineers, and airport custodians.

According to the union, the city's failure to negotiate in good faith and its use of unfair labor practices to limit employee and union rights led to the members of the union voting to approve the one-day walkout.
