Saudi Arabia to Celebrate Flag Day for the First Time on Saturday

March 11th, Saturday, Saudi Arabia will observe Flag Day for the first time in its history as a special day to honor the national flag each year.

King Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman, the founder of the Kingdom, adopted the Saudi Arabian national flag on this day in 1937 AD, which is why March 11 has been designated as Saudi Flag Day.

King Salman of Saudi Arabia has proclaimed March 11 of each year to be National Flag Day in celebration of the Kingdom's flag. Since the establishment of the Saudi kingdom in 1727, the national flag of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has stood for strength, sovereignty, and cultural harmony. The flag has served as a light, haven, symbol, and reminder of the Saudi state's unity efforts for almost three centuries.

“The declaration inscribed on the Saudi flag has significantly contributed to the accomplishment of everlasting historical achievements, namely the country’s unity that took place 300 years ago. During this long period, the Kingdom has witnessed other remarkable victories, for which national days must be declared," said historian Dr. Mohammed Al-Zalfa speaking to Arab News.

Deep meanings are connected with each of the colors and slogans of the Saudi flag. White denotes purity and peace, green represents growth and fertile soil, and the sword stands for security and justice. This sword symbolism has Arab origins and is a representation of Arab virility and nobility. The term "shahada," or "the statement of Muslim faith," is written above the sword on the green Saudi flag.
